It’s very important to create a natural sleeping surface for a baby. Studies show that a natural sleep surface actually lowers the heart rate and induces deeper, more beneficial sleep. Baby’s growth and development is rapid and babies do tend to sleep a lot, don’t they? This is a wonderful option and we recommend it for infants over 3 months of age.

Consider this to be a natural "sheepskin" without the skin and the chemicals that are used in a tanned hide. How? Super soft Premium Eco-Wool™ woven into a backing of 100% organic cotton.

If a non-organic mattress is being used, we highly recommend a topper to put some distance between your baby and the non-organic mattress, which by law is required to contain fire retardant chemicals that have proven to be ill to our bodies. 

This topper is approximately 1.5" thick and is unmatched in its softness.

Natural Fleece
Our natural fleece is made up of two fabrics that create an all natural and sustainable sheepskin without the use of harsh tanning chemicals. Instead of skin, the Premium Eco-Wool™ is woven into a backing of organic cotton knit yarns. This creates a stable fabric for the wool to stand vertically, supported by the woven cotton backing. This is constructed much like a shag rug if you will.

Your Baby and Wool

Of course you want the softest, safest, cleanest, most natural materials right next to your baby. That's what we want for our children too.

What if my baby is allergic?

Many times babies and adults are actually allergic to the chemicals and fire retardants in bedding, rather than the materials themselves.

We do not use any chemicals in the processing of our wool. There is no carbonization (wool dipped in a chemical bath) whatsoever.

Our sheared wool is washed with a biodegradable soap and rinsed several times in scalding hot water before going to the mill to be carded. It's actually the cleanest wool available on the market. Seriously - and we've seen it all.

Isn't wool scratchy?

Some wools are, but not all of them. Two factors contribute to itchy wool:

1. the grade of wool (coarse to fine), and 
2. Carbonization chemical processing.

So to address both factors:

1. Our wool is a snuggle soft medium-fine grade wool. It's inherent loft makes it an ideal wool blend for bedding. 
2. Our wool is never carbonized. EVER.

 

• We recommend that you do not wash the Happy Lamb Fleece for the first 6 months or so until all of the vertical wool layers have a chance to become uniform and slightly felt from the weight and heat of your child’s body. After that uniformity is reached (you will know) it will be safe to wash using our specific washing instructions provided with your product.

  	Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certified This organization established comprehensive rules for ecological and socially responsible textile production. A GOTS certification ensures the organic status of textiles from harvesting of raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, and then all the way to labeling in order to provide credible assurance to the consumer. Since its inception in 2006, it's gained international recognition, enabling processors and manufacturers to supply their organic textiles with one certification, which is accepted in all major markets. GOTS's logo and labeling system makes certification holders visible not only on the shelves of natural textile shops, but also in large-scale retail stores and brand dealers as well. ALL WOOL AND COTTON used at Holy Lamb Organics is  GOTS certified.
  	Oregon Tilth Certified A nonprofit research and education membership organization dedicated to biologically sound and socially equitable agriculture. Oregon Tilth offers educational events throughout the state of Oregon, and provides organic certification services to organic growers, processors, and handlers internationally. ALL  WOOL AND COTTON used at Holy Lamb Organics is  Oregon Tilth certified.
  	IAOS The IOAS is a non-profit certification organization dedicated to the integrity of eco label claims in the field of organic and sustainable agriculture, environmental management, social justice and fair trade. They work internationally to assess the competence of organizations providing certification to "sustainability" standards, meaning producers can work in a fair environment and consumers can trust the products bearing these labels and the company's contribution to a more sustainable and fairer world. IAOS's role is as an independent technical expert. It verifies correct application of the standard and the requirements for certification. ALL WOOL AND COTTON used at Holy Lamb Organics is IOAS certified.
  	OEKO-TEX® Association Independent testing organization for harmful substances according to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 for textile products since 1992. This organization provides manufacturers in the textile and clothing industry with a uniform benchmark on a scientific basis for the evaluation of potentially harmful substances in textiles. The OEKO-TEX® label indicates the additional benefits of tested safety for skin-friendly clothing and other textiles to interested end users. The International Oeko-Tex® Association, a union of 16 renowned institutes for textile research and testing in Europe and Japan, in over 60 countries worldwide. "Confidence in Textiles."   	Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified An independent non-profit membership-led organization that sets standards under which forests and companies are certified. Their membership consists of three equally weighted chambers; environmental, economic, and social. The FSC's mission is to promote environmentally sound, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world's forests through a certification process that involves 10 principles and 57 criteria that apply to FSC-Certified forests around the world.   	UC Davis Toxicology Lab Tested California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory All of the wool we use in manufacturing is tested for heavy metals through fiber sample analysis. The official report indicates: "No toxic compounds were detected....Growers and ranchers raise sheep relative to organic standards (do not use herbicides, pesticides or growth hormones)."
  	Element Materials Technology Tested All of our raw materials at Holy Lamb Organics are required by law to pass a specific Phthalates test (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act CPSIA of 2008). The tests are regularly conducted by this agency. All of our toppers and mattresses are also required to the cigarette burn test 1633. Our verification is printed on all of our sewn-in product labels: "This Product Complies with the Federal Flammability Standard 16 CFR part 1632".
