The Latex Mat is the most allergy safe and supportive organic crib mattress. Natural rubber latex forms a springy core and is sandwiched between layers of organic coir for extra support. The coir is then wrapped in our unique organic lambswool which is bathed in a mixture made from lemon, lavender and eucalyptus, making it completely natural as well as maintaining the excellent thermal insulating properties of natural wool.

Organic Latex
Latex foam is wonderful stuff. The milky sap from rubber trees (Hevea Brasiliensis trees to be precise!) is tapped straight from the tree (similar to tapping syrup from a Maple tree) by cutting a  groove into the bark which allows the sap to exude into a container (usually a coconut shell) over a period of hours. The liquid latex is collected every morning and taken along to a marshmallow machine (it's totally true) which pumps air into the latex to create a great vat of foamy white froth, just like a giant cappuccino. This is then laid out in deep troughs that are put in a large oven to set. The final product is a wonderfully elastic and supportive material which has an open structure (lovely and breathable) and is naturally hypo allergenic.

Organic Coir
Organic coir is one of our core ingredients and in case you didn't already know coir comes from coconuts! We are the only UK mattress maker using certified organic coir (coconut fiber)
All of our coconuts are grown organically in Sri Lanka on farms that are certified by the Control Union as organic and environmentally responsible. We don't use any pesticides or chemical fertilizers, preferring to use organic compost to encourage a sustainable farming program. We are very fussy about our coconuts, in fact we are 'coco nuts'. It is very important to us that they are grown organically and sustainably and on farms that practice fair trade.
The coconut husks are soaked for up to six months, the coir fibers are then recovered from the coconut pulp by a beating process which separates the fibers from the pith of the outer skin of the coconut. The fibers are then dried and coated with a natural latex solution to make the coir more supportive and breathable.  It is then placed in a heated press which compresses the product to the density and thickness we require for our mattresses. The other key thing for us it that the density of our coconut pads meets with our strict demands - too dense is too firm, and not dense enough makes too feeble a spring - it has to be just right. Getting it just right is a nut we have definitely cracked!

Organic Lambswool
Our organic lambswool comes exclusively from local farms around Devon and Dorset who are certified organic by the Soil Association. We are passionate about supporting local businesses and around us in Devon, farming is still an important industry that is vital to so many livelihoods. Luckily for us there are also many sheep farms who have chosen to farm organically, so we can get all our organic wool from sheep that are so close to us we can see them!
We then clean the wool, also locally, on the edge of Dartmoor using water from the river Dart. The water is then filtered and cleaned and returned to the river without any environmental impact. The dirt and mud that is washed out of the wool then goes into an anaerobic digester to make organic compost. If this wasn't brilliant enough we then make the lambswool anti dust-mite by adding essential oils of  lemon, eucalyptus and lavender (also certified as organic by the Soil Association)
